Damson Tree 'Merryweather' (for medium to large gardens)

Damson are a form of plum, usually bitter in flavour, however Merryweather can be enjoyed as a dessert or used in cooking as it has a sweet flavour. The fruit is dark purple, almost black in colour, the tree produces reliable heavy crops. The tree is self fertile so does not require pollinating partners. Damson are very easy to grow, thriving in sun or some shade and on any reasonable soil. Eventual height and spread on a St Julien A rootstock: 4m x4m. Useful Guides:

  • Size & Shape: It is supplied in a 12 litre pot and will be approximately 1.8m (6ft) tall including the pot. The image of the tree next to the spade provides you with a guide to the size of the tree (it shows a pear tree in full leaf as a size guide only. Your tree's leaf cover will vary depending on the seasons and the type of tree you have chosen!). This tree has been grown in the ground for 2 years then for at least another year in its pot; all on a British nursery in Worcestershire. It will have a clear stem of around 45cm with a central leader and well developed side branches. It has been summer pruned to form a well balanced and well shaped head. This type of pruning also stimulates maximum flowering the following spring
  • Eventual Size: Grown on St Julien A rootstock, height and spread: 4m x 4m
  • Garden Size: This rootstock produces a medium sized, more robust, free-standing tree whose yields increase with age. It is ideal for medium to large sized gardens
  • Type: Eating but can also be used in cooking and for preserving
  • Estimated Time To Cropping Once Planted: 3 years
  • Estimated Time To Best Yields: 7 years
  • Position: Plant in sun or some shade
  • Support: Staking is recommended for the first 5 years
  • Soil: Any reasonable moderately fertile soil
  • Growth Rate: Average to fast
  • Flowering Period: April to May

  • Pollination: This variety is self fertile / self pollinating, meaning there is no need for a pollinating partner
